Deposit
You need to remember that with the average weekly rent per person in London being around the £100 mark your 6 week deposit and month in advance can sum to over £1,000. This is a large amount to pay before your first instalment of student loan has even been paid.
London Transport
Transportation in London, despite what the media claims, is excellent. The tubes are very frequent and the buses run 24 hours a day seven days a week. It’s also very reasonably priced if you have a student discount card. To obtain one of these you need to go to your university reception and ask for an application form, which you will need to be stamped by the university as proof you are a student. They cost £5 and you will receive a 30% discount on all weekly, monthly and yearly travel cards.
A 2 zone tube and 4 zone bus pass is around £54 a month with the discount. This enables you to use all the night buses also. Considering you will most likely buy at least one travel card a week, at around £4.50, and use a couple of night buses a travel card can come in handy.
So by moving a bit further away from central London you may save about £100 a month in rent and only have to spend £54 a month on travel. But considering you would probably spend around £20 a month on travel anyway this is a good saving. Also the new oyster system is excellent and you can avoid annoying queues.
