Student Insurance > Car insurance types

Comprehensive
Most people will recommend a driver should buy fully comprehensive cover. This covers damage to your car (whether it is your fault or not); personal injury costs; and any third party's vehicle and property. This is the most expensive type of car insurance and should be considered by anyone with a quality car. Comprehensive cover should also be the option for those who have purchased a car on credit, as even if the car is a write-off, you will still need to pay for it.

If your car is an old “banger”, then comprehensive cover may not be the most appropriate option. Third party, fire and theft is a cheaper alternative and covers all eventualities apart from the full cost of your vehicle.

Third party only
This is the legal minimum and the cheapest cover available. If your car is burnt, damaged or stolen, you are not covered. Those with low-value cars should buy it.

Legal expenses
Cover for legal expenses may be included in your policy or offered as an add-on. Should you need to pursue another driver through the courts, it will mean that your legal fees will be paid.

Car Insurance Costs
The price you pay will depend on a number of factors, such as, the car make and model. There are 20 insurance groups. The value, performance and cost of replacement parts influence the category your vehicle is placed in. Statistically, women are safer drivers and, therefore, they often pay lower premiums. You may also be offered a discount if you can park your car in a garage at night.

Occupations also matter. For example, actors pay more than office workers. Under the disability discrimination act, there is less scope for insurers to discriminate. However, they can still charge more if they can prove a certain disability (for example deafness) poses a proven higher risk.
